Increasing Intersex Births Due to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

A number of studies suggest children can be born with intersex variation (i.e. ambiguous genitalia/hermaphrodite, pseudohermaphroditism, etc.) due to exposure to endocrine disruptors . Evidence shows that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment can cause potential altered gene expressionreproductive variation and neural sexual differentiation through dysregulation of normal reproductive tissue differentiation, growth, and maturation if the fetus is exposed to EDCs during critical developmental times in utero. Prenatal, postnatal life and puberty are the three main temporal windows of susceptibility when EDCs may act and cause other biological variations in those exposed to hormone disrupting chemicals.
