Preparedness + Opportunity = Luck

October 24, 2025
I read somewhere that "luck is simply preparedness meeting opportunity." I love this definition, because it resonates with me on a faith-based level.

Luck or Faith

Whether you are a person with strong convictions regarding faith or luck, it is my belief that they are very similar when viewed through a simple equation.

  • Luck/Faith = Preparedness + Opportunity
Overnight Success

When people say someone is "lucky," they tend to imply something completely random happened, as if a person was in the right place at the right time, without any effort or intention. Like the rolling of dice, it just simply happened.

  • Lucky = Random + Uncontrolled
A common example is the so-called "overnight success." of a performer. Case and point, when a musician gets "discovered" people often call it luck, but anyone who has "made it" will argue otherwise. They'll say they worked relentlessly for years and when opportunity finally appeared, they were able to "seize the moment" because they had been preparing for it their whole life.

A musician never becomes an overnight success without first learning their instrument, writing songs and putting in thousands of hours of practice. Without preparedness, every opportunity, no matter how perfect would be lost, simply because the skill set wasn't there to support it.

The Truth

So if preparedness is our responsibility, as a component of the formula for luck/faith, how does one access the opportunity potion of the equation? The Truth is, opportunity is not ours to create, control or manage. It is the part of the process that unfolds beyond our will, our timelines and our expectations.

Opportunity arrives in its own season, often in ways we could never have orchestrated on our own. While preparedness is the work of our hands, opportunity is the work of Truth, aligning the right moment, the right people and the right environment so that our preparation has a place to land.

My Journey

In my journey, I discovered that it's vital to differentiate between what is my responsibly and what Truth's is and to not confuse the two. I cannot accomplish Truth's part and it can’t accomplish mine. It's a partnership and only I can prepare for the opportunity Truth has prepared for me. I've also learned that if I choose to trust Truth and wait for what it has created for me, while continuing to prepare for its arrival, I won't be disappointed.
However, as I prepare, if I create an expectation around an opportunity that is not mine, I will be disappointed and will likely stop preparing for the real opportunity that does belongs to me.

Consequently, my expectation must be adjusted, for disappointment is proof I engaged in something that simply wasn't meant for me. What this usually means is that I need to circle back and stop pursuing opportunities based on my own expectations.

My goal, therefore, is to continue to have faith and keep preparing for as long as it takes until the opportunity that matches my preparedness arrives, so in the end I can truly be "lucky."
